Another Great Read(again)

without comments

This book does something special inside me every time I read it.  I first read it a year ago, and it truly inspired my approach to this great game and my approach to my practice.

Unfortunately; as my 2008 progressed, my poor play really deterred me from the teachings of this great book.  I had lost my passion for the game and for practice.  Golf became a job, a job I was struggling with.  This hurt because golf was always a fun game that I loved, and for a few months last summer, I was falling out of love with the game.

Reading this book cover to cover over the last two days has re-sparked my passion and love for this game, and the quest to get as good I can.

The practice routines in this book are great, and I’m very excited to stick with them all year long.

Pairing the teachings from this book with the last two great reads of Blink, and Talent is Overrated has been monumental.  These 3 books have come together to really motivate and inspire my quest to be great.

Weekend Recap+Video!!!

with one comment

So I’m settled here in my US home-base of Bradenton, Fl and it’s great to get back to the usual spots I would frequent when last down here.  I find myself at one of my favorite locations to blog: Starbucks.

This past weekend’s event was very fun and very different at the same time.  First things first; shorts, carts, range finders??? yeah, mini tours are very different!  The other major difference was with yours truly.  I really felt like a different Andrew on the golf course.  I’m more calm, focused, present, and I’m enjoying myself a whole lot more.

The first round was great with exception of any shot that required touch or feel…I had none.  I shot 79 thanks to some golf shots that were nothing but comical.  That round put me out of any chance of cashing a cheque, so the only goal was to play better for my own well being.  I went out after the round and worked on a few things with hopes to improve for the next round.

The final round was much better, I fired an even par 72 that frustrated me more than the 79.  I made a few sloppy mistakes but all and all it was a very good weekend, where I can take a lot away with me.

The best thing of the event was my putting!  I rolled it so well, and most importantly my head was so strong and consistent over the putts.  This was some proof that the work back home is really moving in the right direction.

All and all, this was a great event for me both on and off the course, exactly what I was looking for.  Sure, a couple of 66’s and the victory would have been sweet, but I’m still very satisfied with the two days.

I documented the trip down and put it all into a nice little video for you guys!

I’m planning on using video much more this year.  I’m going to use the video to give you an even deeper look into my life of professional golf.

Atlanta Update

with one comment

So I’ve been here in Atlanta at fellow Can Tour player Derek Oakey’s apartment for a few days and it’s been great.  The drive here was nice and brief from Nashville, which is always appreciated after the 20 hours I spent in the car getting to Nashville.
Getting here Tuesday, I got 9 holes in and a little time on the range to shake off some winter rust.  It was so nice to get on a golf course.

Yesterday was bad weather so we didn’t get any golfing in.  We spent the day packing and moving Derek’s stuff out of his current apartment here in the ATL.  We went to an amazing burger restaurant called Flip.  I will make a point of going there every time I come through Atlanta.  The kicker was the liquid nitrogen infused milkshakes they have, so good!

Today was a bit cold but we braved it nonetheless with a solid 8 hour day in Cartersville working with Derek’s swing coach Scott Hamilton.  Scott and I worked on some things for my swing and it was very productive and encouraging.  Scott works with lots of tour players on all levels form the Can Tour, Nationwide and PGA.  He really knows what he’s doing and his help gives me a good focus for the time practicing in Florida.

I’m leaving tomorrow morning for Wildwood, Fl and a practice round for this weekends event.  It’ll be great to get right under the gun this weekend to give me a push towards Q School next month.

I’ve been documenting the trip down on video and will put something together once I settle in Bradenton.

I’ll keep you posted on how I play with my twitter account immediately following the rounds this weekend.  A post tournament blog will follow

So long Ottawa

with one comment

I’m here in Ottawa tying up any loose ends before I head south to Florida this weekend, and needless to say I’m very excited to get on a golf course.

My time in Florida will be a little different than the 3 months I spent down there in 2008.  I will be a little more competitive this time around, trying to play as many small events as I can.  I want to do this so I can get battle tested and feel that much sharper when Q School rolls around mid March.

I’ll also be practicing very differently than last year.  This year I have a major focus for my entire time down there, and if I stick to that focus I will be very pleased with the 5-6 weeks down south.

Going down to Florida will be different this time as well.  Unlike my 26 hour straight shot down last year, I’ll take my time this year.  Much like I did across the southwest, I’ll make a point of stopping and seeing some cities of interest.  The major stop will be Nashville to see a city that I’ve heard only great things about and am very excited to see.  Following that I’ll be heading over to Atlanta for a couple of days to meet up with a buddy I made from the tour last year.  It’ll be a nice time of playing and practicing in the ATL.

I plan on getting into Florida on the 20th and playing an event right away.  I’m entering a weekend Florida Golf Tour event.  I’m excited to get thrown in the fire of competition right away.

All and all this time in Florida will be less vacation and more work, which I’m very very excited to say.
